Lot 18 1930s Japanese JOL-Faced Tambourine
This tambourine was produced in Japan during the early 1930s. It is made from banded wood with a taut glazed paper face, which has an image of a pleasant JOL. One of the sets of four cymbals is missing. Japanese tambourines of this period often will have bells rather than cymbals. I feel the cymbals are original to the item. The taut paper face is less taut than it was when made. Over its over 90 years of existence, the paper of the face has shrunk and rippled with the overglaze holding it all together. The tambourine measures ~6.25” in diameter. I’ve only seen this tambourine one other time, so is this an example of scarcity overriding condition?
