Lot 83                  1920s Viscoloid Celluloid Weighted Egg with Two Perched Owls
This celluloid egg shows two perched owls in high relief with a moon behind. The egg was produced by Viscoloid of Leominster, Massachusetts during the 1920s and is so marked. The egg is weighted, enabling it to stand upright on its own. The colors are beautiful and unusual. The item measures ~3.5” high by ~2.25” in diameter. Because of celluloid’s delicate nature, many items from this period have condition issues, and this is no exception. Thankfully, all are on the back of the egg. There are two small dents - one being more of a short, horizontal line. There is a closed and stable .25” tear through the maker’s mark and a clean separation to the right of the maker’s mark and along the top of the black band that measures ~1.75”. These can be best seen in the last photo.
